Ruehr wins two-year lease from Drug Free Club and Ganley Chevrolet

Most Aurora High School students have walked past a white Chevrolet Equinox on their way to or from school at some point this school year. After months of sitting outside the main doors of Aurora High, the Equinox has a new home.

Back in September, it was announced that members of the new Drug Free Club were eligible to win a two-year lease on a new Chevrolet Equinox, provided by Ganley Chevrolet of Aurora. This was part of an initiative by the Drug Free Club in order to draw in new members.

According to Aurora High School Principal Paul Milcetich, Drug Free Club was created to cultivate and enforce a healthy culture among students by promoting the importance of living a drug and alcohol free lifestyle. 210 students ended up joining, adding up to 22% of the student body becoming members.

Over the year, members received several perks, such as free ice cream at lunch and free admission to a Lady Greenmen basketball game. The biggest perk came in the form of the chance to win the car provided by Ganley.

Milcetich says James Reinhart, the General Manager of Ganley Chevrolet of Aurora, was excited to work with the Drug Free Club by offering the lease, and did not hesitate at giving away a two-year lease.

At Aurora High’s Senior Breakfast May 21st, it was announced Junior Ashley Ruehr had won the lease.

Ruehr joined Drug Free Club at the beginning of the school year with some friends in order to help promote the importance of a drug free lifestyle. She says she was incredibly surprised to win the lease.

“I was in shock and couldn't believe that it was actually real. I turned to my mom and kept asking "What do I do?" because I was so surprised. I got more excited throughout the day after I fully grasped what happened.”

After going through a few formalities and getting to pick the car’s exterior color, Ruehr plans to keep the car for her senior year of high school. She will then give it to her little brother when she graduates.

As for continuing on with holding drawings for cars, Milcetich says he does not know if that will continue in years to come. However, he says Reinhart is excited to keep working with the Drug Free Club in order to provide perks and experiences for members.

“We want to continue the momentum and the positive start we had this year with the Drug Free Club.”
