NHS luncheon 2019
The NHS luncheon took place on May 24th at the Barrington Country Club. The purpose of the luncheon is to introduce the newly inducted students into the organization and establish who will hold the leadership positions.
All of the students who were inducted into the club along with the 4 prior student leaders attended. Teachers Jennifer Simmerman and Kasie Burroughs, advisers of the club, were there as well as Superintendent Pat Ciccantelli, Assistant Superintendent Mike Roberto, Principal Paul Milcetich, and Vice Principal Brian Brookhart.
When we arrived, chips and water were set up on every table for us, and we were given three food options; Chicken parmesan, a caesar salad, or an Italian wrap. I ordered the salad and it was very good. To top it all off, there was an ice cream bar with tons of toppings to choose from!
To start the event, Lisa Boyd (Simmerman’s mom) spoke about the volunteer work that she has done. She explained how doing what you love can be a form of volunteering and how she turned her passion of physical therapy into a way to volunteer. She has traveled to Mexico and The Dominican Republic to help provide people with wheelchairs and the materials they need through an organization called Wheels for the World.
Simmerman explained why she chose her mom to speak at the luncheon: "It is important for people to see regular everyday humans doing work to help others. My mom isn't famous or rich. She works a full time job while raising a family but she was still able to give back. It is easy to make excuses why you don't have time, but when you discover how what you are talented at can help someone else, you are more likely to freely and willingly give of yourself to help others. My mom exemplifies that. And she has gone to some great places and done some amazing things. You never know where service will lead you.”
Next, we began the process of choosing leaders. In order to be considered for a position as a student leader, you had to give a small speech about yourself. You could stand up and nominate yourself or someone else could nominate you to speak. There were about fifteen candidates for the positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. After everyone spoke, each student was allowed to vote for 4 people. After voting, it was determined that Colin Krupinski would be President, Lauren Callahan, Vice President; Kendyl Trem, Secretary; and Caroline Eggett, Treasurer.
Krupinski said, “I wanted to become an NHS officer because I have an interest in leading and helping others. As President, I hope to help facilitate our meetings and help everyone as much as I can.”
In all, with Krupinski as the new NHS leader, the meetings will be efficient and everyone will be able to volunteer for what they love.
