Billie Eilish shakes the music industry with her new album
On March 29, 2019, Billie Eilish released her magnum opus, a.k.a. her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? The album made history, for 313,000 sales were produced within the starting sale week. Alongside these facts, Billie Eilish now has seven gold and two platinum singles.
As a music enthusiast, the process of discovering the indie pop artist did not take incredibly long. In fact, it was almost impossible not to find her presence in the music industry.
The song that instantly got me attached to Billie was Bellyache, a song about murder disguised as an ear-wormy and upbeat synth anthem.
Over time, Billie’s aesthetic changed to a more dark and edgy aesthetic. Her music videos include things such as spiders crawling on her face and an Exorcist-like possession.
The first single, You Should See Me In A Crown, contains hard-hitting trap beats and sinister mumbling vocals. In my opinion, this is the song that finally got Billie the attention she deserved (although that is not to say that she didn’t have a decent fan base prior to the song). This song stands out as one of my favorites.
Another song worth mentioning off the record is the polarizing Bury a Friend. The intoxicating and sparse instrumental along with the commonly used mumbling vocals make for a repetitive use of the “replay” button.
The single, Bad Guy, which was promoted the same day as the album release. The glitchy trap-pop banger serves as an appropriate song for the mainstream radio.
Other songs that deserve an honorable mention on the favorites list are All The Good Girls Go To Hell, When The Party’s Over, and Ilomilo.
Wish You Were Gay, while a good song on paper, has weak production and little resonance within the album.
The final three tracks, Listen Before I Go, I Love You, and Goodbye, while beautiful and delicate, all sound like the same song. If wouldn’t hurt if Billie dropped one of these three songs.
Overall, Billie Eilish proves that her music leaves a great statement within the music industry. Many artists have either collaborated with Billie or have been greatly influenced by her work one way or another. This album is a must listen for audiences on almost all spectrum. The dark themes present within the record are themes nearly everyone is familiar with, and considering its presence on the mainstream radio.
