Aurora enjoys going "into the woods"
The spring musical this year was Into the Woods and if you did not attend, you missed out. I saw the production twice: during their dress rehearsal on Wednesday night to take pictures for the yearbook and again with friends on opening night which was Friday. Wednesday there were a few mistakes, but they fixed them to kick off the showing with a spectacular opening night.
The musical itself is a twist on multiple different fairy tales. The narrator (Logan Jancsurak) tells the story. A baker (Alex Olsen) and his wife (Sophie Longo) find out that a witch (Hannah Kulawiak) has placed a curse on them so they cannot have a child so they must find 4 specific objects to break the curse. Then there’s Cinderella (Ryan Kacmar) goes to the ball, despite her circumstances with her family, and meets her prince (Johnny Kushan). And there’s Jack (Mason Kacmar) who must sell his best friend--his cow, Milky White (Claire Schiopita) --because he and his mother (Alana Noel) are running out of food to eat. Finally, there’s Little Red Riding Hood (Gilda Chestney) who takes bread and sweets to her sick Granny (Gina Marzulo) in the woods, but meets a wolf along the way. All the plots entangle by the end as the characters meet and interact with one another.
The musical itself was a little long (about two hours and forty minutes) but so much about the show was great that it was easy to care less about the time. In the writing itself, there are the humorous parts. For the most part, the acting was great; it was the little things that made it so good, such as the expressions on the actors’ and actresses’ faces. The singing was incredible. The cast was made up of students from all grades and all different amounts of experience levels; however, they all worked well together.
Each year, the musical entertains the audience and this year was no difference.
