Time for rugby to be added to Spring sports line-up
Aurora offers a wide variety of sports and activities, but one sport that the school does not offer: Rugby. Rugby is becoming a widely popular sport in the U.S. It is famous overseas and the sport is taking America by storm. A group of Aurora students are embracing the sport and going outside of the school, to Walsh Jesuit High School in order to play.
Senior Ryan McBride is playing for his second year and is the reason most of the other students are also playing at Walsh. Ryan will also continue playing Rugby in college at Bowling Green State University.
Of the sport he said, “It’s very unique because of it’s different history and customs. The lingo used for the sport is very different and the respect that the players have for each other is a lot more than the sports we usually play.”
With a 3 month season in the spring, Rugby would be a perfect edition to the Aurora sports lineup, with students traveling to a different school to participate in the sport, it feels as if it is time for Aurora to offer the sport to students. Other Aurora students who play the sport at Walsh include Dante Leone, Alec Houston, Matt Dedomenico, Tiger Schwartz, Jeffrey Burger, and Seth Stojetz.
Dante Leone said, “I didn't play any spring sports at Aurora and none of them sounded interesting to me and Rugby was new and offered that to me.”
The students that play at Walsh are already trying to get the sport integrated into the school as they have tried to convince the athletic director, Paul Powers, to get one their games to be played at Veterans Stadiums. However, it was too late in the season in order to schedule a game. It is past time to start offering other sports at Aurora High School, and Rugby would be the perfect start.
