Friends from college provides many laughs, so why was that not enough?
Funny, realistic and easy to binge are great methods to catch attention for a Netflix original. In the past month, “Friends from college” has been a controversial show in the Netflix hemisphere. This Netflix original meets the funny and realistic realms, so why did this show find its end?
“Friends from college” is a comedy-based show, portraying the everyday life of a group of promising Harvard graduates. The group obviously being friends from college, seemingly has complicated relationships with each other, romantic entanglements and a desperate love for their past. Each episode takes the viewers through the constant battle of friends trying to balance their forties and their college memories.
“Friends from college” first premiered July 2017 and was renewed for another eight-episode season after success of the first. Co-created by Stoller and Delbanco, Stoller directed the series while Delbanco served as a writer.
Additionally, “Friends from college” was built up of a well- known and well-respected cast. Nearly all of the members of the cast have had some type of recognition for their success. The cast being composed of Keegan-Michael Key, Cobie Smulders, Annie Parisse, Nat Faxon, Fred Savage, Jae Suh Park and Billy Eichner. With such talented actors “Friends from college” took off to a promising start.
So what went wrong?
After the first season the plot seemed to hit a stand still. “Friends from college” remained a comedy-based show; however, unlike the first season, the comedy was not enough to keep the show afloat. The romantic entanglements and complicated relationships between the friends remained, but never became climactic.
Although extremely relatable, “Friends from college” was unable to remain filming for a third season. The show was recently cancelled on Presidents Day this February. However, “Friends from college” past seasons can still be watched on Netflix.
All in all, I strongly believe this show had plenty of potential it just ran its course quickly. However, I would still recommend watching the first two seasons for a relatable story and some laughs.
