Is Captain Marvel overrated?
Captain Marvel had been a highly anticipated Marvel movie that most had been craving for since the unsettling ending of the Avengers: Infinity War. The movie has already hit a global box office of $500 million and it’s only been one week. In fact, it was one of the movies that had the hardest pre-sales in Marvel. However, even since the trailer had been released there has already been controversy over how it would fare compared to the other Marvel movies.
The first heated discussion was over the casting of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. Most thought that she wouldn’t fit the character of Captain Marvel. I personally had seen Captain Marvel the moment that it came out, which was a day before it’s ‘official’ release date. When it came to casting, I can’t say that there were any real flaws, but there were a few unsettling things about the overall character Carol Danvers. She was said to be the most powerful Avenger to be added to the MCU, however, I just can’t see it. Carol Danvers just seems to pale in comparison compared to powerhouses like Thor and Captain America.
Of course, her first movie will say everything about her, but I’m just basing things off the movies. Fan theories say that she has the potential to wield the Infinity Gantlet and send Thanos to the Quantum Realm from Ant-Man, but from all the power that the movie showed, I’d say she’s almost nowhere near that power level. Toward the end of the movie, she did receive a ‘power up’ when she broke free of the Kree’s chains of influence, however, I didn’t see the Thano’s beating kind of power behind her punches.
Despite this, I still recommend the movie. For me, skipping a movie in the MCU is like missing an important chapter in a book. You don’t know what details will come up and where. There are plenty of hints to dissect in Captain Marvel so it should make for an interesting stepping stone toward Avengers: Endgame. As for endings, you can’t really be satisfied because there is going to be another movie after it so the Russo brothers don’t want to leave you on an ending note.
