"Captain Marvel" soars high

“Captain Marvel” officially hit theaters last Friday, March 8, as the twenty-first installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film starred Brie Larson in the titular role of Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), along with Samuel L. Jackson returning as Nick Fury, Jude Law portrays Kree warrior Yon-Rogg, and rounding off the star studded cast is Ben Mendelsohn as the leader of the Skrulls, Talos.

Although fan speculation surrounded the film ever since the first trailer, the movie grossed the sixth highest opening weekend box office of all time with $541,661,315. The film also earned a 79% on rotten tomatoes, not one of Marvel’s best, but still good overall for any movie.

The movie follows the story of Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, an extraterrestrial Kree warrior who finds herself caught in the middle of an intergalactic battle between her people and the Skrulls. After landing on Earth in the mid 90’s, with only flashes of her memory of her previous life on Earth, she must enlist the help of Nick Fury to uncover the secrets of her past life and learn to harness her superpowers to end the war.

The overall story of “Captain Marvel” is exciting and keeps the viewer interested throughout the entire film. With small surprises and a major twist, the movie is a blast for hardcore fans and casual audiences alike. Speaking of blast, the visual effects throughout the movie add to the excitement and make the characters really pop off the screen. The end credits scene is one that you will not want to miss as well, as it moves the entire MCU forward.

Along with its own great story, “Captain Marvel” adds a lot of depth to the overall MCU and shows how truly interconnected all of the movies are. For any Marvel fan, the movie is a joy and a must see. But at times the pacing feels a little off, although it does not take away from the overall enjoyment of the film. Other than that, everything in the movie works well for it. Especially the dynamic friendship between Fury and Carol is a joy to watch and brings some good laughs.

Overall, the movie is fun, exciting, and heartfelt with all the elements of a good action movie. “Captain Marvel” is a must see for anyone who enjoys movies.
