Does class size matter?
Class size is often looked at more for college students to be able to see the student to teacher ratio. But, does class size matter in high school too?
Class sizes are pretty standard in each high school and they design the schedule so that most core classes have an equal number of students in each period. For some students this may be too much and they aren’t getting the one on one help they need in class.
Each student’s brain works in a different way and they need different learning techniques that could take more time. But in larger core classes there is usually just lectures, notes, and one way to look at a concept. Some students need more individual learning styles that are catered to the way that their mind works.
With that being said, I believe that schools should offer some smaller class sizes. Not every period needs to be cut down but I think if a few smaller classes were offered for core classes that this would help students improve the way that they learn and also benefit them in the future.
Some classes rely on a large class size because of the topics being taught and the need for class participation. In some classes it can be difficult to keep the class going because of a small number of students.
Students would benefit from being able to learn in a smaller setting because it would help them understand the way that they learn. For some students discovering the way that they learn best can be difficult, so if they are given the opportunity to find this it will help their future education. They will know what works best for them and be able to take these learning techniques to college to help themselves.
According to member of International Foundation for Leadership in Education (ICLE),Weston Kieschnick, “Class size matters because it allows the teacher greater proximity to the students, and thus more opportunities for one-to-one and small-group instruction”
Overall, smaller class sizes should be offered to benefit present and future success for high school students.
