Recess in high school is the way to go
Recess for students is the equivalent of a coffee break for adults. It would be a time for students to relax and take their minds off school for a short period of time. The school day can be very stressful and cause a lot of kids to have anxiety and feel pressure. A recess period would be beneficial to high school students both mentally and physically.
During a recess period students could really do whatever they want. They could do homework, study, sit outside, relax, talk to other kids or take a nap. It would be a time for students to clear their minds and take a break before having to go back to class and sit at a desk for long amounts of time.
More than 25 percent of teens ages 13 to 18 have a diagnosed anxiety disorder at some point, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Even students who aren’t struggling with a disorder often still have trouble getting through the painfully long school day. With only a few short minutes to be hurried to their next class between periods, they get worn out. It becomes harder and harder for them to pay attention when sitting in class.
Studies have shown that children who engage in physical activity get the benefits of improved physical and mental health. Recent health reports also state that sunlight has a positive effect on people. When skin is exposed to sunlight it creates Vitamin D3 which helps aid in overall health and emotion. This small amount of time in the sun will have a long lasting positive impact throughout the school day.
Between work and other activites many have so much going on after school that it’s hard to make room for exercise. Students could go for a walk, play basketball, soccer, baseball, kickball etc. If schools were to set aside just one period for recess it would relieve stress and help overall classroom performance.
Recess would give brains a chance to regroup for a bit, students can go back to class feeling refreshed and ready to learn again. Recess also would serve as an opportunity for social and emotional interactions that don’t take place in the classroom, like meeting new friends.
Recess shouldn’t be just for little kids. Teens also deserve a chance to blow off steam and recuperate from time consuming classes. After all, taking care of mental health is just as important as what you’re learning in class.
