The great thing about Small Great Things
Books brings a lot of happiness to almost everyone. Finding an intriguing, new book is even better. A new book called Small Great Things has been on the rise for awhile The book is a work of fiction and is written by Jodi Picoult. The book was published in 2016 and is going to be turned into an upcoming movie since then. The novel includes the issue of race and a great extent of controversy, which makes the novel so good to read.
The story line involves an African-American labor/delivery nurse, Ruth Jefferson, in charge of newborns at a Connecticut hospital. She is ordered not to touch the baby of a white supremacist couple. The hospital complies, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac arrest while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Ruth has to make a decision between obeying orders or intervening. The story is told from the complex multiple racial perspectives of the characters, the nurse Ruth, Turk Bauer, the white supremacist father of the baby, and Kennedy McQuarrie, Ruth's lawyer.
Picoult did much research on this topic given the fact she classifies herself as a white and privileged. She also talked to many people to go with her research, especially women. Picoult knows how to tell an interesting story, and the novel moves quickly. This is a writer who understands her characters inside and out. She knows her story equally well. In terms of research, Picoult has put in the work.
I believe this book is a must read because of the constant controversy it brings and the desire to overcome adversity. It keeps you reading always and keeps the readers turning the page. You can purchase the novel at any local bookstore.
