International Club offers a unique experience for students
With about 30 members, International Club is one of Aurora High School’s biggest clubs. Melissa Foster has been the head adviser of the club for over the past 15 years, along with Rose Brown joining her this year. Before the club was formed it used to be Spanish Club and French Club, then the two merged and was later turned into International Club.
Head adviser Melissa Foster said, “International Club has changed throughout the years. Over 15 years ago Spanish Club and French Club were separate. Then about 5 years ago we combined them to Spanish French Club. Then about 3 years ago we decided that the clubs should not be limited to only those students enrolled in a language class. Therefore we came up with International Club so it is all inclusive of our student body.”
The club is all about inclusion, they welcome anyone to come to their meetings, whether they are a member or not. They focus on people’s unique culture and ethnicity. Meeting once a month at 2:30 in room 104 with monthly meetings shared on the morning announcements and on the clubs google classroom.
“I joined international club sophomore year after I heard we would hear presentations from foreign teachers and scholars, I was interested to hear about their lifestyles”, said Senior club member Will Baldwin.
The club does not go on trips, but they do however have many guest speakers. Including having a headmaster from Uganda speak to the club about his boarding school. Other fun experiences include having a party with the students from Costa Rica and having a man from China teach the club how to do calligraphy.
Often focusing on international trivia, games, music and food. Also exploring its own club members races and ethnicities, International Club is open to anyone and everyone with an interest in multiculturalism throughout the world.
