Legendary 30 for 30 story of famous coach, Bob Knight
`The term “documentary” is a very common nowadays and documentaries have changed the way TV and film. There seems to be a documentary about almost everything you can think of. “The Last Days of Knight”, a documentary about famous Indiana basketball coach, Bobby Knight. Documentaries can be for everyone, ranging from school age children to retired elders. Not many people know of this documentary, but I believe this is a must see, especially if you are into sports.
The documentary aired on ESPN+ on April 12, 2018 and joins the incredible library of “30 for 30” films. If you are unfamiliar with 30 for 30s, it is a documentary series featuring today's finest storytellers from inside and outside of the sports world. What started as a celebration of ESPN's 30th anniversary has come to life as a fascinating collection of passionate films about sports and culture. Individually, each of the films in this series is meant to tell an intimate, compelling story that stands on its own and brings to life the filmmaker's vision. Collectively, however, these creatively different films weave together a diverse view of what sports has meant to culture. Ultimately, 30 For 30 strives to sit the viewer down and tell a story, employing many sources but giving a distinctive point of view.
“The Last Days of Knight” is about a basketball coach, Bob Knight, who came to coach at Indiana University at a young age, starting in 1971. Over the next few decades, he became a coaching god. Knight delivered three national titles to a state that worships the game, earning a reputation as not just a basketball genius, but a brilliant leader who equated hard work and discipline with success. And yet, there was another side to that success.
In April 1999, Robert Abbott, a producer for CNN/Sports Illustrated, began reporting a story investigating why three high school All-Americans had left Knight's program over the prior two years. Nearly two decades later, the 30 for 30 film "The Last Days of Knight" is the previously untold behind-the-scenes story of that investigation which produced a chronicle of accusations, denials, and discoveries; riots and death threats; and the fall of a coaching legend. Directed and narrated by Abbott, it's a tale about success, power, abuse, institutions, journalism, and ultimately, a search for truth.
I believe people should go out and watch this documentary because of how it really shows the truth behind success and how some things are not really as it seems. It really shines the light on how so much power can go to one’s head and lead them on a dark path. It shows how some collegiate athletic institutions hold more power than the college board itself and it should never be that way. “The Last Days of Knight” truly shows how with power comes responsibility.
However, in order to be able to watch this 30 for 30, you will need to purchase ESPN+ for 4.99 a month.
