Yoga club
The workload that comes with school can be overwhelming and extremely time consuming for many students. With that being said many students do not take crucial time for themselves to work on bettering their lives both mentally and physically. Having a yoga club at the school would be a great way for students to tackle caring for the mind and the body.
Freshman Mallory Leeds shares,“the high school environment can be stressful and overwhelming. An outlet offered by the school could be helpful to me and the other students.”
It is extremely important for students to take time to relax, clear their minds, and care for their bodies physically. A great way to take care of both of these things is through yoga and meditation. Even if it is just for a short period of time participating in yoga and meditation can relieve stress as well as care for your body.
According to the MHA (Mental Health of America), “Deep relaxation, like meditation, when practiced regularly not only relieves stress and anxiety, but also is shown to improve mood. Deep relaxation has many other potential benefits as well—it can decrease blood pressure, relieve pain, and improve your immune and cardiovascular systems”
The high school should offer a before or after school meditation and yoga club twice a week to give students an outlet for stress. It can be difficult for students to relax not only during school hours but also outside of school. Some students are not given resources or opportunities to participate in group exercise or sports.
The school offering yoga and meditation would create a positive and social environment where students can unwind from their day or prepare for the day ahead of them.
The MHA shares that “children and adolescents need an hour of physical activity every day, with vigorous activity at least 3 days each week. They also need muscle and bone strengthening exercises at least 3 days of the week.”
Senior Leah Angelo shares “yoga is a great stress reliever and motivates me to take things day by day. Having yoga before or after school can give students a chance to unwind and relax.”
Overall, the school supporting a before or after school yoga club would give students a stress outlet and encourage an active lifestyle.
