Adding a breakfast option to lunchroom would help all involved

Often times high school students prefer to hit the snooze button over eating a quality breakfast. Although breakfast is very important, it often takes a backseat to getting a few more minutes of rest. The result of this is the most important meal of the day being skipped.

Kids who eat breakfast regularly perform better in school and have increased attendance. On the contrary, kids who skip breakfast typically are more distracted, have lower attendance, and poorer grades, according to U.S. News.

Obviously, the goal is for each kid to reach his or her full potential and reach the highest level of productivity while in school.

“When I eat breakfast in the morning I’m more focused and feel like I have more energy. It definitely helps and I think it would benefit everyone,” said Junior Lenny Galaska.

With this being said, it is important for schools to offer breakfast to students every morning. Instead of only offering food at lunch, schools have the ability to open their lunchrooms before, during, and after the first bell to provide students with the opportunity to eat lunch.

“Teachers would be more than willing to make sure students get breakfast if it would make them more focused and productive in class,” said social studies teacher Nick Kukarola.

Here in Aurora we are very fortunate to have the Greenmen Cafe every Friday morning during first, second, and third period.

While the Greenmen Cafe is a fantastic fundraiser, the lunch lines could be opened without having any effect on their sales. It is too much to ask the Greenmen Cafe to be open every day, but there is no reason the lunchroom cannot be open from Monday-Thursday with the Greenmen Cafe staying open on Fridays.

I believe this could actually help their sales. The majority of high school students rely on a morning routine from the second they wake up to the moment the first bell rings. With this, if students begin to get breakfast every morning, they will not forget about the Greenmen Cafe on Fridays like what happens relatively often currently.

“I enjoy the Greenmen Cafe; however, sometimes I forget on busier Fridays and I think having a breakfast option every day would definitely help me remember,” said sophomore Nick Boehm.

Now, what would the lunchroom offer? Well, that is up to their discretion. However, all that is needed is your typical breakfast foods.

It is very rare that a student wakes up on a school day and has a full restaurant-style breakfast. So simple items such as bagels, fruit, the small boxes of cereal (like they offer at Harmon), and oatmeal would suffice.

Getting something in your stomach is better than nothing and it will help make students more productive and focused throughout the day.

Overall, this would benefit the school as well as they would be able to make more money.
