Little White Lies is an honestly good read

Most people would jump at the chance to get a full ride to college. However, this typically doesn’t entail finding out secrets about not only yourself, but also everyone around you.

Little White Lies centers around Sawyer Taft, a girl from the stereotypical wrong side of the tracks. While she is content with spending her time working in a local mechanic’s shop, her plans change when her estranged grandmother offers to pay for Sawyer’s college education-as long as she participates in the upcoming debutante season.

For those unfamiliar with debutantes, a “deb” is a teenage girl making her formal introduction to society. It is a tradition among the upper class, mostly to form social connections and preserve tradition. The debutante season typically takes place in the southern United States.

While Sawyer agrees to her grandmother’s plan in order to get the money, she also plans on using the opportunity to figure out her birth father’s identity. On the way, she not only uncovers secrets about her own family, but also about her friends’ families.

Over the course of Little White Lies, readers journey into the world of debutantes. While, of course, this is a book of fiction, it is interesting to learn a little about this tradition, especially because it isn’t common here in Ohio.

Another great aspect of this novel is how it is a quick, easy, and entertaining read. Sawyer, our narrator, is very sarcastic (which I personally find hilarious), and very relatable to the everyday teenager. The plot moves fast, but readers never feel behind due to how easy it is to understand Sawyer’s thinking.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the debutante world, or anyone simply wanting to take a break and relax for awhile. The book may seem intimidating at 421 pages, but the intriguing plot helps readers fly through the story. On the other hand, this book could be considered more of a “chick-lit” type of story, so if that isn’t your thing, this may not be the novel for you.

Fortunately, the author of Little White Lies, Jennifer Lynn Barnes, has confirmed the book will get a sequel, and could eventually turn into a series. This is great news for fans of the book, even if we may have to wait some time, seeing as how the original Little White Lies has barely been out for a month.

The new semester has started, and your free time will probably be limited for the next five months. However, if you’re looking from an escape from homework and studying, I would absolutely recommend picking up a copy of Jennifer Lynn Barnes’ Little White Lies.
