A Second Act: More than a comedy
Starring American singer and actress Jennifer Lopez, A Second Act is a must see while in theatres. Jennifer Lopez playing Maya, a forty year old working girl in Manhattan struggling with unfulfilled dreams.
A Second Act is more than just a comedy, but an empowering movie for women around the world, tied in with a love story, and mother-daughter adoption. The plot of a Second Act makes you laugh but tugs at your heart strings. This movie has an underlying theme of having enough time to fulfill your dreams and reinvent yourself.
The movie casts Milo Ventimiglia, famous for his “This is Us” appearance, as Maya’s boyfriend. A Second Act also stars Leah Remini, as Joan, Maya’s best friend, but also Jennifer’s real life best friend. Casting these two together really took the movie to the next level, seeing their chemistry come out on set.
What was most interesting was when Leah and Jennifer did improv a little with each other as the movie went on, at one point Leah even hit Jennifer across the face, cracking a laugh throughout the audience.
The director Peter Segal stated, “When we had a little get together at her apartment, we just read through the script, and I got to see what their real-life relationship is like. These guys are like sisters. You start throwing out some joke at her that, “Oh wow,” and she just like zing them right back, and that’s when I encouraged her, I said, “You got to do this on the set.”
As a women struggling to fulfill her dreams, this movie is relatable and keeps the audience interested and laughing. The laughs are also complemented with scenes of extreme emotion. Vanessa Hudgens stars as Zoe, Maya’s lost daughter she put up for adoption. When they reunite the movie takes an emotional turn, facing the complicated relationship these two characters play.
Overall, I would recommend this movie to everyone for a good laugh, but especially to women looking to be empowered.
