New Clubs and Activities AHS Could Benefit From By Adding
Students are always looking for a new club to join or new activity to try. Schools are always searching clubs and activities to put in place. Trying something new gives students a new thing to look forward to and there is always room for improvement. Some new clubs or activities that would a good options for AHS would rugby, lacrosse, fantasy football club, Woodshop Club, and Sign Language Club.
Two sports that would great additions to the school district would be rugby and lacrosse. Rugby is played with an oval ball that may be kicked, carried, and passed from hand to hand. Points are scored by grounding the ball behind the opponents' goal line or by kicking it between the two posts and over the crossbar of the opponents' goal. Lacrosse is a team game in which the ball is thrown, caught, and carried with a long-handled stick having a curved L-shaped or triangular frame at one end with a piece of shallow netting in the angle. Lacrosse and rugby are popular in other school districts like Hudson, Chagrin Falls and Walsh Jesuit in Cuyahoga Falls. These sports can be beneficial to the school because when new students come to the district and they played at their previous school, it can make adjusting easier by finding friends and something to look forward to as well.
“I played rugby when I lived in England. It would be a good sport to add because it’s an all gender sport so the girls that are intimidated to play football, they are able to play rugby. It also teaches self defense in a way” said my senior, Faith Bromfield.
Fantasy football club would also be a great add to school clubs. Boys are less likely to join clubs in high school and fantasy football club would be a club that boys would be willing to join because of boys’ love for the NFL and football games. If one is unfamiliar with fantasy football, fantasy football, like other fantasy games, puts you in the front office and on the sidelines as general manager and coach of your team. You select from a list of the best players in the NFL and they compete on a weekly basis for your team. Their on-field performance drives your fantasy point total and overall success. You decide what type of league you want to participate in, acquire a roster of players (either through a draft or through autopick assignment), then set your lineup each week during the season and watch as touchdowns, field goals, yards gained, sacks, interceptions and much, much more generate fantasy points for or against your team. The club is a fun way to get students interacting in extracurricular activities in the school
“This would a cool club to add because a lot of people in the school play and it would good place where lots of people could do it together. It would also help the players. It can also be free, money does not have to be involved” said by junior Johnny Papesh.
Another fun activity that students could participate in if created at the school would woodshop club, where students would be able to create wood objects through the activity or skill of making items from wood, and includes cabinet making, wood carving, joinery, carpentry, and woodturning. Woodshop would be a fun club to add for students who are into architecture, building things, and being creative which woodshop allows all three things. Although it could be dangerous at times, with close and responsible supervision many students could enjoy this club, but could also prepare students and let them know what kind of things they need to do and know if they plan on doing things similar to woodshop in their future.
“I think this would a kind of new and fun club to add, something to change things up around the school. I’m pretty sure the kids had it middle school so why not bring it back for the students to enjoy, but it is dangerous so the supervisor would need to have a close eye on the students participating” said by teacher, Erika Greenberg.
Lastly, a unique club to add would be a sign language club. If unfamiliar with sign language, it is basically a system of communication using visual gestures and signs, like your hands, face, and body, as used by deaf people. This would be a fun club or activity to add because it would give students a new thing to learn since a majority of our students are fully hearing. Also, sign language could a beneficial tool later in students’ lives. The benefits of learning sign language are things like enriching relationships, it increases their IQ, it facilitates bilingual learner. It would be a great club in schools because a lot of people in their lives will run into someone who is deaf. They won't have very many ways to communicate and will have to have a basic understanding of sign language. `
