"Into the Spider-Verse" swings into theaters
“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opens in theaters Friday, December 14th, but due to early Thursday screenings some audience members were able to view the film a day prior to the global release. Currently sitting with a 99% on rotten tomatoes, it is one of the year’s best reviewed movies
The new hit film follows the story of, you guessed it, Spider-Man. But this is not the usual Peter Parker Spider-Man that we know. Instead it explores a new iteration of the wall crawler: Miles Morales (played by Shameik Moore), an African-Latino teenager who is just trying to overcome his awkwardness and fit in at his new boarding school and enjoys graffiting.
When an accident gives him the powers of Spider-Man, he must learn what it means to be a hero and take down the villainous Kingpin (Liev Schreiber). In a plot to bring alternate worlds together, Kingpin unknowingly brings other “Spider-people” to this universe. The new people must team up with Miles and bring down Kingpin in order to return to their homes.
But the relationship that stands out the most in the film is the one between Miles and an alternate version of Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), an older and more experienced Spider-Man, who will teach Miles the ropes of being a hero on his journey to becoming Spider-Man. Other alternate super heroes include Gwen Stacy: Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicholas Cage), Peni Parker (Kimiko Glenn), and Peter Porker: Spider-Ham (John Mulaney)- a pig version of the web slinger.
Not only does the relationships stand out, but the animation is unlike anything anyone has ever seen. It’s unique in a way that makes the viewer feel as if they are in a comic book. It is as if a comic book was brought to the big screen.
The movie is a unique twist on a classic story and brings to life comic book characters that audience members have been wanting to see for some time, and it does so in spectacular fashion. “Spider-Man into the Spider-Verse” is one movie that you will not want to miss.
