Princess Switch: should you switch off the T.V.?
Vanessa Hudgens pulls a double act in the new Netflix Original The Princess Switch. This is a holiday romance movie about an ordinary baker from Chicago named Stacy, and a British princess from Montanaro named Margaret. When they discover the two girls look exactly alike, they decide to do a princess switch. Margaret lives like Stacey and Stacey lives like Margaret. As you can imagine, in the end Stacey falls in love with Margaret’s soon-to-be husband, the prince, and Margaret falls in love with Stacey’s best friend Kevin.
The most important challenge in this movie is for Stacey and Margaret to not get caught, but in the end when the two girls realized who they truly fell in love with, they have to give themselves up. Both girls end up trading lives for the weekend and many feelings start to arise in that time period. This movie might even end with a proposal.....
Stacey and the Prince’s love story was magical. It is full of hope and love. While Margaret and Kevin’s love story was not as pronounced as Stacey and the Prince’s, it was still a beautiful story of romance during the holiday season.
The main actress, Vanessa Hudgens, plays both roles of Stacey and Margaret. She is most well known for her role as Gabriella Montez in the Disney Channel classic High School Musical. The prince, played by Sam Palladio, is well known for his role in the hit series Nashville.
This festival holiday movie is directed by Mike Rohl. He has previously directed movies like The Eleventh Victim and Royal Matchmaker. He is famous for directing Hallmark-like Christmas holiday movies. These movies are very festive and somewhat cheesy
This is a great movie for around the holidays. It is like a hallmark movie. If you like cheesy Christmas movies, this one is definitely for you. You can definitely see what is going to happen in the end, but it is still a very cute movie to watch with your friends and family.
This holiday season, Netflix has produced several movies with a “Hallmark” vibe to them. One of these includes a movie called The Princess Switch starring, Vanessa Hudgens (known for High School Musical movie series, Grease: Live, and more).
This story introduces Stacy Denovo as a baker with her own bakery in Chicago. Her best friend of 12 years, Kevin, enters her in a competition and she travels to a far off kingdom called Belgravia. Taking Kevin and his daughter with her, Stacy goes to compete and runs into the Duchess of Montenaro, Margaret, who looks identical to her. Margaret wishes to live a normal life for a few days before getting married and asks Stacy to trade lives with her.
Although the movie is listed for all ages, I can only see it reaching a young audience. With such a weak storyline and numerous cliches, I cannot imagine anyone liking this movie less than I did.
Off the bat, the viewer can obviously notice the plentiful amount of cliches including Olivia being a ballerina who wants to perform the “Nutcracker”, both Stacy and Margaret falling in love, Stacy liking to plan while Margaret is spontaneous, Stacy arguing with the prince about her opinions, horseback riding, ornament making, a snowball fight, christmas carolers, and finally the royals going visit an orphanage to give Christmas presents.
In the past, I’ve been a fan of Vanessa Hudgens, but this movie simply makes her look bad. As she moves on to do bigger and better things, she carries all the other actors with her. I’ve never heard of Nick Sagar (Kevin) or Sam Palladio (Prince Edward) previous to this movie; their acting was the only part that made the terrible storyline slightly better.
On top of it, all the characters were two dimensional and they only slightly change, if at all. The ending of the story is also completely predictable and there were several plot holes by the end of the movie. Yet, if you want a movie combining The Princess Diaries, The Parents Trap, and other “Hallmark” cliches then maybe this movie is for you.
Ultimately, I would not recommend this movie as there are so many other ways a person can spend their time. My only hope is that Netflix can make better movies in the future.
