The season’s guilty pleasure: binge watching Hallmark movies
Every weekend around this time of year the family room TV will most likely be turned to the Hallmark channel. For almost more than a decade, Hallmark has been producing holiday films based on the same winning theme. They start by playing up emotional connections like love and relationships and at the same time celebrating the Christmas season.
The holiday factor to the channel is a main part to the success of the movies, lifting Hallmark to number one on cable during the months of November and December.
“It’s really about celebrating the holiday, not just making it a backdrop,” says Michelle Vicary, Hallmark’s head of programming. “This is the time of year when people really want to feel good, feel like part of a community and part of the holiday season. When you spend two hours with us and watch an original movie, when you’re done, you feel better about yourself and the world.”
The Hallmark channel is a great way to spend time with your family and to have on as background noise while decorating the tree or making Christmas cookies.
Senior Taylor Burick states, “ I love sitting down under a warm blanket and binge watching Hallmark. The movies always bring Christmas spirit and never fail to have you awaiting Christmas Day.”
It is a great channel to put on if you are looking for a feel good movie or just want to watch something peaceful and relax a bit. Personally, my family always watches the Hallmark movies and 25 days of Christmas. It has become sort of a tradition in my house and I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
One down fall to the Hallmark movies is that they can be very similar to each other. They have the same set up, happy beginning with two people that like one another and in the end fall in love with each other.
Senior Shayla Seller states, “I really enjoy watches these movies. They are funny and cute but unfortunately are all the same. Sometimes it feels like you are watching the same movie over and over just with different actors.”
This is all true but it really comes down to your own preference. If you are someone who enjoys the holiday romance then this is a great channel for you to watch, but if you don't like sappy love stories center around the Christmas joy then I would not recommend this for you.
Over the years the ratings have greatly increased for these holiday films. Here is the Christmas list with dates of the movies for this December 2018:
