Making a splash into the 2018 season

The Diving team is plunging into their 2018 season. The Diving Team consist of Seniors Drew Albrecht and Michelle Guan, Juniors Bella Stoyle and Kylie Palian, Sophomore Victoria Blechschmid, and Freshmen Donovan Picone. They are all taught by the coach of Solon High School, Mark Callahan.

Diving and Swimming go hand in hand and they both compete at most of the same meets. The Diving team performs their dives before the swim team begins competing. Many divers also compete in many swimming relays and regular races as well.

Senior Drew Albrecht feels that they will have a great season this year with many record breaking scores and medals to come.

There are many dives that a single diver can complete. All of these dives are put into 5 categories: Forward, Back, Inwards, and Twist. Each of those 5 categories are also put into 4 more categories: Tuck, Pike, Straight, and Free. All of the dives have a different level of difficulty as well, which plays a part in the scoring system.

Swimmer and Diver Kylie Palian said, “My favorite part about diving is the practices and getting to meet new people.“

Palian also said she likes to learn to skills to challenge herself mentally and physically

Diving is scored by a panel of 4 to 7 judges who score between 0 and 10. ‘0’ means you completely failed the dive, while ‘10’ means you executed it perfectly. The highest 2 scores and the lowest 2 scores that the diver completed are discarded and the final score depends on the 3 remaining dives. Those 3 dives are then added together and multiplied by each of the dives degree of difficulty, thus the final score is determined.

Go check out the Swimming and Diving team every Wednesday Afternoon. They are sure to have a fantastic season with many record breaking scores.
