Veterans day breakfast

The Veterans Day breakfast that took place on November 9th was a huge success with the Service Learning students and teacher Melissa Foster as a part of the driving force behind the event to honor our Veterans. 60 Veterans attended and there were over 120 guests at the event.

Foster shared,“The Aurora Service Learning students do a fabulous job of organizing all the details and decorating the school. Many of the chaperones heard first hand stories from the veterans. One AHS student told me that her grandfather starts asking when the veterans breakfast is as soon as school starts in August.”

The breakfast included time for the Veterans to eat and talk with family, friends, and fellow veterans and speeches.

A major factor of planning the breakfast was how to make it unique each year and memorable in new ways.

Foster said, “Each year we try to make some improvements and changes to the breakfast, especially since some of the same veterans attend each year. We don't want it to be too repetitive or boring for them. This year our guest speaker was Mr.Kudley of the Aurora Historical Society. He shared some very interesting details of past residents of Aurora that have served in the armed forces.”

Kudley began his speech by sharing history of Aurora.

“Aurora’s first settler, Ebenezer Sheldon served as a minuteman in Col. Oliver Wolcott’s regiment responding to the Lexington alarm in 1775 which went in relief of Boston,” said Kudley.

Foster added, “The team that put the breakfast together also added a ‘take home’ gift bag for each veteran which contained a coffee tumbler and locally produced honey provided by our cafeteria manager Kathy Funnell. Also new this year, the event was filmed by Community Focus and will be aired on tv.”

Many new ideas were brought into the breakfast this year and created great memories and a place for the students and the community to honor our veterans.

Kudley concluded his speech in a great way by saying, “And while we take one day in November to honor you and another day in May to honor those who gave their lives in defense of our nation, we are thankful to you for giving us the freedom and ability to live freely in this great country. Thank you for your service.”
