Aurora's thoughts on Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving from the Gambit staff!

The results are in for the Thanksgiving survey. We received a collection of 148 responses.

Mashed potatoes won the favorite food category with 30.3%, and stuffing came in at a close second with 24.6%. Other options were turkey (17.6%), dinner rolls (7%), ham (2.8%), and sweet potatoes (8.4%). Some of our other favorite responses included mac’ n’ cheese, extra spicy Cajun roasted carrots and turnips, and Hickory River smoked BBQ.

Gravy will be a popular addition to Greenmen’s Thanksgiving tables, as 67.6% of voters enjoy the traditional topping.

Unfortunately for fans of cranberries, 31.7% of voters determined it was the #1 unwanted food. 18.7% of voters wanted sweet potatoes to leave, 11.5% harbor a hatred for green beans, 9.4% want to get rid of stuffing, and 8.6% have determined turkey has no place on their tables. Some of our personal favorite responses include “My mom likes to stuff the turkey's body cavity; it's so gross. Hello, bacteria”, as well as “any and all casseroles”.

Turkey is the classic Thanksgiving centerpiece, but people have strong opinions about it. Most voters (56.3% to be exact) prefer light meat, whereas 26.8% prefer dark meat. 16.9% don’t want either dark or light.

Overwhelmingly, voters call Thanksgiving Thanksgiving (86.6%) but shout out to the 13.4% that feel Turkey Day is a more appropriate title.

Most of AHS will wake up to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, as evident by the 66.7% that said they watch it every year. Football is also popular, with 52.6% of voters saying they’ll be tuning in. The National Dog Show may not be the most popular option for Thanksgiving entertainment--regardless 23.7% of voters will watch it.

Luckily for Greenmen working Black Friday, 31.7% of voters said they partake in neither Black Friday nor Cyber Monday. 28.9% shop Black Friday, 18.3% shop Cyber Monday, and 28.9% shop both.

Pumpkin pie won as Aurora’s favorite dessert (38.7%), with apple pie in second place at 16.2%. Other popular options included cheesecake (11.3%), chocolate dessert (11.3&), holiday cookies (9.9%), and ice cream (7%). There were also some unique choices, such as fruit salad, fruit tarts, and mincemeat pies.

Greenmen’s favorite Thanksgiving include spending time with family, eating food, saying what you’re thankful for, and the annual Turkey Trot run. Some of our other favorite responses include watching the Indiana Jones trilogy, “The grandmother gives all of the grandkids pajamas for Christmas day”, backyard football, playing Bingo with dollar store prizes, “Kazotsky kick. Eat rocks. Chase children with drumstick”, “take a picture with the turkey at the part where the opening is and you can see the gross stuff inside”, and fighting over the dinner rolls.

Have a great Thanksgiving, Aurora High, enjoying whatever you enjoy. Thanks to all who voted--we’re thankful for you!
