"Bohemian Rhapsody" wows in theaters

The epic Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody opened on Friday, November 2nd. The film depicts the life story of lead singer Freddie Mercury (Rami Malek) and the band Queen. Other band members include drummer Roger Taylor (Ben Hardy), guitarist Brian May (Gwilym Lee), and bass player John Deacon (Joseph Mazzello).

Malek’s portrayal of the extravagant lead singer is mind blowing. Viewers become instantly attached to the star and feel an emotional connection to him and his story, they feel his joy and pain and isolation. The resemblance in the film between Malek and Mercury is so uncanny that at some points it is hard to tell if it is not the real Mercury.

The music throughout the film was outstanding, this is a Queen movie after all, bringing back timeless classics such as “Killer Queen”, “We Are the Champions”, “Somebody to Love”, “Another one Bites the Dust”, and of course, the titular song “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and many more. The way the film portrays the creation of each song was a fresh look at the music industry. Delving into the creativity and emotion that goes into each song. The recreation of the “Bohemian Rhapsody” scene particularly stood out, with unique ways of creating the sounds and lyrics of the song.

But more than the music the movie dives so deep into the relationships of Freddie and the relationship between the band the viewer gets emotionally involved and genuinely cares about what happens the four members of the rock group. So when they make mistakes, you really feel those mistakes as an audience member. But when they succeed, you feel the victory just as much as the band itself.

The music performance scenes are what stand out the most out of anything else in the extraordinary biopic. When the band plays on stage you feel like your in the audience, feeling every note and lyric hit you and out of all these performances, the recreation of the infamous Live Aid concert is the stand out. It leaves the audience with goosebumps, it is so accurate and exciting that you take your eyes off the screen.

Ultimately the film is definitely one you will not want to miss. It is for those who are diehard Queen fans and just the casual moviegoer will find themselves leaving the theater completely satisfied.
