Mamma Mia is a hit at the Hanna Theatre

Downtown Cleveland is full of attractions, including Playhouse Square. This theatre district introduces many shows to the public through their 7+ theaters with many different production companies. One of these companies is the Great Lakes Theater and their Cleveland Classic Company which occupies the Hanna Theatre.

This 2018-2019 Season will include many shows such as The Taming of the Shrew, A Christmas Carol, and Million Dollar Quartet. Most recently and just closing this November 11th was Mamma Mia.

Mamma Mia is the popular story about a girl trying to figure out who her dad is just days before her wedding. This popular musical includes many upbeat songs based off of the music by ABBA. After a sequel new to the original movie, Mamma Mia remains in the spotlight and proved to be a good choice for the Hanna Theatre.

While simultaneously running the show Pride and Prejudice, the actors of the Great Lakes Theatre managed to pull of an amazing show that was never low on energy. The choreography filled the whole stage while their voices shined through the theatre. Some of the highlight voices were Kailey Boyle (Sophie Sheridan), who’s bright voice reflected the character perfectly, as well as Jodi Dominick (Tanya) and Nick Steen (Sam Carmichael) who have impressive voices for performers who are normally known for their acting.

This smaller production wasn’t as extravagant as the travelling Broadway show which came to Cleveland two years ago. Some of the songs were performed differently and didn’t measure up to the original production. Although the musical was missing several elements from the original production, it was still fun to see and watch the production while listening to the cheerful music.

All in all, it was a good show which reaffirmed the Great Lakes Theater’s diverse play and musical genres. This will stand as a good show put on by the company which will bring an even bigger audience to the Hanna Theatre in the future.
