Hockey team has high hopes for upcoming season

As the cold winter season is around the corner, Hockey season is just warming up with high hopes for the Aurora High School team. Lead by head coach John Sheridan and assistants Joe Lawrie and Lee Pfiffner, the main players on the ice this season are Cam Mullin and Jack McElwee playing the wings, Jack Pfiffner at center, Patrick Murray and Maxx Goldstein as defense, and Jordan Smith as goalie. With a winning record last year of 15-8-1 the team has high hopes of winning the Baron Cup this year.

In order to achieve their goals this year the team looks to stay intense at practices while working on the basics, mastering critical skills they need on the ice, and conditioning. Conditioning is a prevalent factor on the team.

According to Junior McElwee, “Our coach played for the legendary Herb Brooks, his big thing was being the most conditioned team on the ice at all times. This helps us win games in the 3rd period or overtime.”

Inspired by Herb Brooks, the hockey team conditions after every practice giving them an advantage, especially in the long games.

With a record of 4-5-1 in the league, the team is looking to improve this year. Senior Pfiffner states, “Last year we had trouble with playing down to our competition, this year we will come to each game with the same intensity and focus for each team.” Being intense and aggressive during every game will lead the hockey team to success.

While McElwee is looking for a successful season for the team, he is also working toward his individual goals, hoping to be “noticed as one of the fastest players in the Cleveland area.”

Looking forward to their upcoming season, Pfiffner states, “I look forward to this season and the new players we are bringing in. I believe that if we come to practice everyday and focus on areas of improvement, we have a team that can win the league and the Baron Cup this year.”

Unfortunately, the hockey team lost their first scrimmage against Orange this weekend, but revived their name against Twinsburg Sunday with a score of 12-3. The Hockey team’s first home game at The Pond is Saturday, December 1 at 4:30 against Mayfield.
