Halloween's Last Reads

October has dropped its final curtain, and with it, Halloween. Now is the time to talk about giving thanks to one another and or all the food that’s going to be eaten at Thanksgiving dinner with our families. Or we can keep talking about the spooky season, aka the greatest season. Because Thanksgiving is overrated anyways.

On the final few days of October, I made it my goal to find some creepy books that’ll have double checking your closet or under your bed just in case something unexpected pops out. Or these books leave you with the urge to start binge-watching a few horror movies. The first book I want to present is Bad Girls Don’t Die by Katie Alender. Bad Girls Don’t Die about rebel sophomore Alexis, who uses her indifferent facade to not care about her parents failing marriage and her suffering social life. Her younger sister, Kasey, is way more sensitive to her situation seems to find a feeling of serenity in her collection of dolls. And no, they’re not American Girl dolls. Soon, Kasey’s behavior starts catching the attention of Alexis, especially when the breaks to their mother’s car are mysteriously cut and their father ends up in the hospital because of it. Now, compared to Stephen King, Alender’s horror writing is pretty mellow. Her writing is mostly based on paranormal, such as possession or oujia board gone wrong situations.

If you’re not sure whether or not horror is for you and you might be timid to try it then I recommend reading one of Katie Alender’s book. I wouldn’t call myself a horror fan by any means. However, there is a noticeable difference between book horror and movie horror. Movie horror I feel like they basically force the scare down your throat, giving the effect of jump scares. But book horror I believe is way more subtle and slows and tends to give you goosebumps instead of a heart attack. Either way, it still makes you want to look over your shoulder just in case something might be there.

The second book that I read was From Bad to Cursed which was the second book in the trilogy. Although this book wasn’t terrible, it wasn’t really as good as the first one. The first book gave a better sense of suspense and was a little more chilling. From Bad to Cursed still follows Alexis, even though its a year later and her sister has been in a mental institution for the past 8 months. This time the protagonist seems to be in a book and his heinous crime is turning the girls into better people?

Even if the next Halloween will be months away, you can still manage to have a chill get sent down your spine so long as you have the right book.
