Wrapping up the cross country season

The end of the fall sport season has come and with it, the end of cross country meets and practices.

After many miles, 5ks, and spaghetti dinners, the cross country runners hang up their spikes for the season as the winter sports roll in, but not without sending their top runners, Karsen Zabell and Matt Singleton, to state. Some runners have continued their season with Zabell and Singleton to encourage them in their success.

Singleton says, “It is extremely motivating, I really enjoy talking with my friends who decided to stay and practice.”

Agreeing, Zabell continues, “I am so grateful for my amazing teammates! They have always been so supportive, and continue to motivate me.”

Together, the whole team has achieved many goals this season; this includes sending both boys’ and girls’ teams to regional meets after the boys’ team got 5th at district and the girls’ team 3rd at district. Many runners, such as Junior Dylynn Lasky, Senior Ben Young, Junior Caroline Eggett, and Freshman Michael Stoycos, made big personal records along with consistently good times from Seniors Liz Keller, Katy Fellenstein, and Robbie Taylor.

Since their pool workouts in July and group runs around sunny lake, the sportsmanship on the team has remained high. Later in the season, the girls team painted the AHS rock and the senior and junior girls even had their own sleepover to become even closer with each other.

“Obviously, I am going to miss the seniors a lot,” Zabell elaborates, “I have been running with them for three years, and it's going to be weird without them.”

Even Singleton, after only one year of running, expresses his sentiments for the seniors, “It’s sad to know that I won’t be running alongside them for the rest of my high school career.”

Still, spirits are high for next year as Zabell and Singleton, along with the rest of the team, look forward to better their times and making more memories. Zabell would love to have a team join her at states next year and Singleton hopes to drop even more time.

Unfortunately, the state meet was delayed due to flooding and moved back to this Saturday, November 10th. Singleton will run at 12:30pm and Zabell will run at 3:00pm on the National Trail Raceway in Hebron. Finally, on behalf of the Aurora Gambit, we wish Zabell and Singleton good luck at state as well as congratulate the whole team for finishing another season in flying colors!
