Aurora Needs to Ready... Set... Relax

Stressed, overwhelmed, tired, all words that reflect how I feel during a typical week at school. The day is not long enough for homework, studying, extracurricular activities, and spending time with family.

Junior Kinze McWhorter said, “I am swamped everyday with sports and school work, I go from school to sports and get home around 9pm. I have no time for homework and sleeping. Therefore, I think the Read, Set, Relax program would be perfect for students at AHS.”

On a typical day, students receive almost one homework assignment from each class and have a sport practice or club to attend, by the time all of this is done, it’s bedtime. There is no time to sit down and watch a show or go out dinner with some friends or family but Ready, Set, Relax can solve this problem.

Ready, Set, Relax is a program that many schools have adopted to help relieve stress from students and to encourage communication and interaction.

Hudson is one school that practices in this program. On Ready, Set, Relax days, teachers are to not assign homework and practices and activities may only go until 5:30.

Hudson City Schools state, “Families are encouraged to eat dinner together, play a game, take a walk, make cookies, or enjoy any other activity they love!”

This day allows students to have an evening off and relax without worrying about grades and activities. The fact that students are told to relax and not do work gives them a sense of comfort. Hudson has this day about twice a year and if the students collect over 1,000 cans for their canned food drive, they are rewarded with another day.

“This sounds like a great idea! I would love to have extra time in my schedule to spend with my family or even my friends on the weekdays,” said Junior Jack Larrance.
