Lue and Hue both fired over the weekend
After a 0-6 start to the beginning of the 2018-19 NBA season, the Cleveland Cavaliers organization has fired head coach Tyronn Lue. Assistant coach Larry Drew was named interim coach on Sunday. Lue led the Cavaliers to three straight NBA Finals, including the 2016 NBA Championship. He finished his career in Cleveland with a 128-83 record.
Student and basketball player Shayla Sellers had this to say on the firing of Lue: “It was smart, without Lebron he can’t win. It shows that he can’t really coach”.
Not only did the Cavs lose their best player, Lebron James, they also lost their coach, but they were still left will a slew of talent left in players in Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson, Rodney Hood, and rookie sensation Collin Sexton. But will it be enough for the Cavs to keep their playoff hopes alive?
One player does not think so. J.R. Smith announced on Thursday that he has requested a trade from the organization. It is unclear as to what made Smith want a trade, most speculate it was the firing of Lue. Smith’s future with the organization and the NBA is uncertain at this time.
But Tyronn Lue was not the only Cleveland head coach that was fired this week. On Monday, Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson was fired from the team. After a 33-18 loss against the Steelers that dropped Cleveland to 2-5-1 on the season, the team released Jackson.
“I’m honestly a little surprised, the Browns have looked a lot better this year, and have already won more games this season, than the past two combined”, said senior Morgan Copely.
He finished his coaching career in Cleveland with a 3-36-1 record, a winning percentage of just .088. Most recently Jackson had been having issues with offensive coordinator Todd Haley concerning the play calls. Haley was also fired from the team on Monday, and he will be replaced by running backs coach Freddie Kitchens.
Defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will take over as the interim head coach, until the organization can hire a permanent head coach.
