Annual Teacher Costume brings together staff
For the past four years at AHS on Halloween, you more than likely noticed the majority of the staff matching in unique costumes. These costumes have been Dominoes, M&M’s, “Price is Right” contestants, and this year, Target Team members.
You may wonder how this started. Well, two of the closest friends in the school are the masterminds. “Mrs. McKenzie and I make up the Sunshine Committee and we usually choose the costume and ask if others are interested,” said Mrs. Wiemken.
The duo spends all year looking online for creative costume ideas. Typically, about half the staff participates annually. Every year, before first period on Halloween, there is a group photo taken in the commons.
The process is pretty simple as well, “We look for something that is easy to put together and doesn't cost too much. On the morning of Halloween, many staff members suggest possible ideas for the next year.”
This year, Mrs. McKenzie made name tags and everyone was told to wear a red shirt with tan pants. Of the four years, she enjoyed this one the most.
For Mrs. Wiemken, there’s one specific reason as to why this was the case, “Some of the students played along saying, “Excuse me, Kathleen, can you tell me where to find the sporting goods?”
Her only regret is that she forgot her walkie-talkie! Overall, this is simply another way for co-workers to have fun and enjoy themselves and that is why it is brought back every year!
“Dressing up with the staff is something I enjoy and I look forward to this tradition every year!” said Stephanie Duncan.
“It’s great to see the staff take part in the halloween festivities because I think it encourages the students to have school spirit as well!” stated Jay Price.
If you have any recommendations for next year’s outfit, be sure to let Mrs. McKenzie or Wiemken know.
