Lady Greenmen basketball has high hopes for upcoming season

As the days become colder, Winter sports are approaching and the Lady Greenmen basketball team’s expectations are high for the upcoming season. With a winning record last year of 21-3 and 2x Suburban league champs, the team has a lot to live up to.

Leading the team this season is head coach Erika Greenberg and Assistant coach Wayne Smith. Returning key players on the court include Shayla Sellers, Haley Ross, Shyanne Sellers, Dylynn Lasky, Becca Crawford, and Julia Mazanec, while upcoming hopefuls include Maddie Burick, Ava Ryncarz, and Mika Dalton.

Although the basketball team is strong and has high expectations, the team will still need to overcome challenges in the season. With a harder schedule than seasons in the past the team will fight for every victory they gain. Ross states, “We feel that because of our strength of schedule we will be more prepared for the postseason and have a chance to go much farther, wins are obviously important but our conference and postseason are number one, we definitely hope to have a three peat.”

The greatest challenge in conference for this season will be against Tallmadge. Ross says, “a lot of teams are in developmental processes and are pretty young but our greatest competition in the conference will probably be Tallmadge because they didn’t lose many players if any at all and they are super athletic and versatile.” Sellers added in, out of conference, Wadsworth and Stow will be their greatest competition.

Shayla Sellers and Haley Ross are both key senior players on the Lady Greenmen basketball team. They both individually hope to lead this team to another Suburban League title and far into the playoff season. Sellers states, “I hope to be more aggressive this season, and being a leader on the court.” As the head coach, Greenberg hopes, “To lead the team in the right direction and prepare them as best as possible for postseason play.”

Although the Lady Greenmen have a big target on their back this year, they plan on preparing themselves to reach success. Sellers says, "We plan to stay hungry and humble. We cannot get too caught up in last year and have to keep wanting to be the best because we know everyone is gunning for us. The first home game of the Lady Greenmen is December 15 at 2:30pm.
