Do you want to be an Aurora buddy?
What is ABC Club? ABC stands for the Aurora Buddies Club. This club brings together students from different friend groups to engage in activities with special needs students. The club meets the 2nd and the last Tuesday of every month. If they have upcoming meetings or events the meeting amount will usually increase so that everyone is able to get the information they need.
The club advisor, Mr. Victor Torres, said, “I think it opens their eyes to a lot. I already have some students that not only enjoy spending time with students with disabilities during our meeting times, but also checks on them throughout the day. The idea is for the typically developing students to build friendships while gaining an understanding and awareness for those with a disability.”
There is not a specific kind of person who is attracted to this club, all are welcome and all benefit from being in this club. This club attracts great students and that is the only thing that is important. This club had been around for a few years and this year they are trying to expand and make a bigger name for themselves.
Mr. Torres had also said, “In a typical meeting we have an agenda of items we usually review. The items can range from upcoming events to future planning, Currently, we are working on planning our next event and preparing for the Autism Speaks Walk this Saturday”
This club also participates in many activities. This upcoming weekend they will be participating in the Cleveland Autism Speaks Walk and the Down Syndrome Joy Walk at Sunny Lakes. They are also currently planning outings with their group members and students with disabilities, hosting a special formal dance with surrounding schools, disability awareness week and Special Olympics among many more things.
