Caffeine intake is point of concern among teens

Caffeine has been around for thousands of years. It originated as a natural substance found in coffee beans and tea leaves and is now extracted as a white powder substance that is added to sodas and energy drinks for its energy boost.

These sodas and energy drinks can contain anywhere from 300mg-500mg of caffeine. This is the equivalent of 2-3 cups of coffee all in one sip. Right now, this may not mean much to you as you most likely not aware of the effects caffeine has on your body and mind.

“When I don’t drink coffee I feel slightly sluggish and typically experience a headache later in the day,” said Social Studies teacher Nick Kukarola.

Overall, caffeine has a different effect on everyone. However, everyone suffers much of the same effects as well. These include dehydration, upset stomach, and jitteriness. In teens, it takes even less amounts to reach these negative effects than in adults. Besides the caffeine, these drinks include excess sugar which can lead to cavities and other negative effects.

More serious effects include anxiety, nervousness, and significant sleep problems.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a 100mg daily caffeine limit for teens and an estimated 73% of high school students consume caffeine each day. From high schoolers favorite coffee shops, to the gas station, to the vending machines around school, these drinks are readily available to teens at a very reasonable price.

“Ice coffee is just a great way to start your day. It tastes good and wakes you up! I know it is not the best for you but I really have not had any side effects from it,” said Senior Taylor Burick.

Work is being done to reduce the amount of caffeine-enhanced beverages available in schools, however they will still be very accessible throughout most of the day. Companies have created addiction-like desires with teens through their advertising and cheap pricing. While these drinks may taste good, there are healthier options.

Instead of drinking an iced coffee or energy drink, maybe try a ice cold glass of water. The dehydration caused by caffeine tired individuals out, while water will keep you hydrated while the ice-cold temperature will surely keep you awake!
