Aurora welcomes new counselor Kalee Oberlin
Kalee Oberlin is in her fifth year of her counseling career but her first year at Aurora High School. She has lived in Portage county for the past three years and did her student teaching and internship at Solon High School. She has always known about Aurora and the great education that it provided and was thrilled to find out about a job opening. She jumped on the opportunity and was accepted for the job and is Aurora’s newest counselor.
Oberlin said that she loves working with children, especially adolescents, stating:
“My favorite part of working with kids is watching them progress and figure out for themselves who they are.”
Working with kids is a tough job for any profession, but for a high school counselor it is extremely difficult. They have to help plan out students entire futures and get them into college, but Oberlin is more than up for the challenge. She knows how hard it is to transition from high school to college so she is trying to help make that transition as smooth as possible.
Outside of her professional career, Oberlin spends her free time doing things such as watching movies, her favorite is Jumanji or heading down to Little Italy to eat at her favorite restaurant: Trattoria. When asked what her favorite things to do outside of school are, Oberlin had this to say:
“I really love to cook and try new recipes. I also have 2 dogs, Penny and Piper, and enjoy taking them on hikes and to the dog park.”
Oberlin grew up Lucas Ohio, near Mansfield, and went to Lucas High School. She got her bachelors and masters degree at Kent State University, so she is familiar with the area and local points of interest. It will take her a little longer to become familiar with Aurora and the student culture. But for now she is focused on becoming a productive counselor. There are over a thousand kids in the high school and her primary goal is to try and get to know all of them and be the best she can be at her new job.
