Crazy Rich Asians, A Crazy Good Movie!
When I first saw the trailer for Crazy Rich Asians, I thought it would be a very funny movie but when I saw it, I learned that it was more so a romantic comedy. Don’t get me wrong it was still a great movie but not what I was expecting. This movie focuses on the character of Rachel Chu played by Constance Wu, and her trip to Singapore to meet her boyfriend Nick Young’s (Henry Golding) family. This movie is based on social class, wealth status, and accepting people.
Rachel Chu travels to Singapore with Nick to meet his family, thinking that his family is middle class, she packs clothing and accessories that she would normally wear. She discovers along the way that the Young family is crazy rich and she worries they well not like her because she isn’t rich. Well… she was right. Mrs. Young hates the idea of Nick being with her and she makes it very clear. This is not meant to be a stereotype to Asians, it instead is meant to show how money can influence relationships. It is common that throughout the movie that Rachel is never accepted by his family and she does not understand why. Like Rachel, I also did not understand. This part of the movie was very frustrating because Rachel is very likable but she gets treated very poorly.
The movie was meaning to send the message that money should not play a role in personality. Rachel is a lovely, kind, and brilliant girl who tries very hard to please Nick’s family. This was a great idea for the movie because it taught a valuable lesson, if you want to know whether or not she is successful, you will need to go see the movie!
I would recommend this movie for teenagers and adults, it was romantic and slightly comical and had many great messages.
