Arepas and more
“A Latin American restaurant concocted with live music, eclectic vibes and warm service. Oh, and we make arepas!”
Barroco is the perfect spot for anyone who likes to venture out to more exotic and ethnic food. Their menu has many different things to try which makes for a great experience.
This is a loud but family friendly restaurant, there is live music, lots of lights, great service, and a lot of food. Barraco is perfect for groups of friends and family.
Along with the vibrant atmosphere, Barraco’s food truly stands out. They offer a wide variety of appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
My favorite appetizers included Empanadas Colombianas and Dee’s bacon wrapped maduritos. Empanadas Colombianas are latin turnovers stuffed with braised beef, potatoes, and salsa.
Dee’s bacon wrapped maduritos are sweet plantains wrapped in bacon and served with queso, sriracha aioli and a balsamic glaze. There appetizers range from 8 to 12 dollars.
Barroc’s famous dish are their arepas which originate from Colombia and Venezuela. They are handmade thick white corn tortillas which are grilled then stuffed with a variety of ingredients.
They offer an arepa that anyone would like, they offer categories including authentic, their original arepas, and American arepas.
I first tried and original chicken arepa with green peppers, onions, roasted corn, and mozzarella cheese. My sister ordered the La Gringa which is from the authentic side of the menu. It includes braised beef, guac, feta cheese, mixed greens, and mozzarella. Arepas are served with your choice of tortilla chips, maduros, red bean chili, tostones, black bean soup, french fries, or yuca fries on the side.
Arepas are extremely filling but delicious. The different options makes it exciting to come back and try new things. You can get any arepa and your side for 16 dollars.
If you are still hungry after appetizers and your entree they offer dessert. One famous dessert is the merengadas which are huge ice cream concoctions filled and mixed with many ingredients. These include the Calypso, circus, payaso, and chocolate lover merengadas. My family and I shared the Chocolate lover which included chocolate and caramel sauce, fudge brownies, chocolate cookies, crushed peanuts, marshmallows, and oreos.
Barraco is definitely worth the trip if you are looking for great food and a fun environment. They have three locations: Lakewood, Larchmere, and Crocker Park.
