GSA Fosters a Welcoming Environment for all

The Gay Straight Alliance club is a club for everyone, a place that offers support and freedom. It is run by Barbara Cook and meetings are held in her classroom on the first and last Tuesdays of every month. This is her first year running this club, it was previously run by Amy Williamson for the past three years.

In this club, everyone is accepted and welcome, students come to receive support and discuss things going on in their lives. Not only do they discuss their own challenges but also current world challenges such as rights and protests. This helps students to become familiar with their community and also their government. In the past, they have created posters for the school that address specific terminology and promote kindness.

Cook says, “ My goal for the club is to foster a welcoming environment for all who support and are in the LGBTQ community.”

So far this year, there has only been one meeting, everyone in the club brought a food dish and introduced themselves, they also shared a little bit about their lives. Later this year, the club will have some guest speakers that will share their stories. They will speak to students and encourage them to be themselves.

Only about five to six students attended the last meeting therefore if you are interested in joining a club, this would be a perfect club because all are welcome and it is a comfortable environment.
