More money more problems for Stock Market Club

The Stock Market Club teaches students about the importance of the world economy and the basics of trading stocks. It is basically like taking an economics class but focused primarily on the stock market and how to invest properly and read the market. The club is broken up into two semesters. Mrs. Jenna Schadle stated that:

“The first semester we will learn the basics of investing and meet monthly. The second semester we will engage in a statewide stock market investment competition and meet every other week. Teams will be given $100,000 of imaginary money and move up the rankings based on the growth of their investment, which they monitor on financial websites.”

Now granted that it is not real money that students are given to invest with, they are able to take risks and have fun with what they do with their money. They could lose it all, or earn ten times the amount that they started with. To add a little excitement to the club, the competition is among many other schools. The student that has the most economic growth throughout the competition gets the opportunity to travel to New York and present their investment strategy to a board of investors and explain how they made so much money.

Wednesday, December 3rd in Mrs. Schadle's Room 117 will be the first club meeting of this year, unless the date changes sometime between now and then. The numbers over recent years have been on the decline according to Schadle:

“Students haven’t been interested for the past two years or so, so we didn’t have a club last year. But recent student interest has got me to start the club again.”

It’s a shame that more students don’t interact in this club, it is one that uses and applies real world problems and teaches students how to not only manage them, but conquer them. It is much like science olympiad but from an economic standpoint. The club is small in terms of other club sizes within the school but it is highly personalized meaning that students are there for their own benefit and how they can make more money.
