Debate Club shines a light on student opinions

Our first amendment gives us the right to free speech and assembly. Why not take advantage of these rights and use them in a beneficial manner?

Debate Club, located in Mr. Rubin’s room, is a great opportunity to get students’ opinions heard about up-to-date issues. The room is divided into two sides. Students take sides by sitting on the side of the classroom according to their stance on an issue. Students also challenge themselves by debating on the side they are against. Meetings are held every other Wednesday.

Club officer Wendy Kristell leading the club since its beginning-- last school year. She has enjoyed being the club leader since its beginning.

“I’ve always enjoyed having open debates and open conversations and I believe that we can learn from one another while doing so,” Kristell stated.

The first debate, which involved the topic of the school dress code, sparked a good discussion between classmates. Other controversial topics such as abortion, the NFL national anthem protesting, and DACA were brought up in other debates. However, in order to have a successful debate, people need to come prepared.

“People need to have facts,” Kristell said. “Debate Club forces people to research and become more knowledgeable about topical issues.”

It is also noted that people who decide to attend a meeting should not feel pressured. People are going to have strong opinions about certain issues, but nobody should be silenced by mob mentality. There is currently a poll being held to determine the next topic for Debate Club. The topics include the use of indian mascots in sports, mandatory voting in the United States, and animal testing.

“We hope to continue to have high attendance for the rest of the year.,” Kristell said.

Debate Club opens up opportunities to students to voice their opinions. Students can also attend a meeting just to listen and observe. A greater number of students involved will lead to successful debates. Exercise your rights by joining Debate Club this year!
