Book club allows for students to share next book reads
The term “book club” has always been a term used no matter if it is a suburban mom get together, a club in a school or even if its something one would do with your brothers or sisters. AHS has been fortunate to have teachers and students that care so much about reading. Book Club has been a club at AHS for about three years now. I think the club is self-explaining, but the club is a little different than most know. The club focuses on students and teachers sharing about books they would recommend, books they are currently reading, or favorite books about a certain genre. Books are quite prominent in AHS with posters of teachers explaining their favorite book and who it is by. Book Club never disappoints and is a great way to find new books to read and recommend
“It gives students who enjoy reading a chance to meet and discuss their current books and to provide recommendations to others. It is also a great place for anyone struggling to find a new book to read to get suggestions from students their own age,” explained by AHS English teacher Melissa Lindley.
As I said previously, AHS Book Club is little different most know. There is no single book chosen that everyone reads and discusses. Making the club different and allowing more kids to join since they are never left behind. Some meetings have themes such as "best book to movie", "Best series", "A book that disappointed", they often have a guest staff member share his or her favorite genre
“Since high school students are already busy with class assignments and novels, we do not choose a common text; instead, each student relates what they like - or don't like - about their current book” said by AHS English teacher Rose Brown.
The club meets one a month with club advisor, Rose Brown. English teacher Melissa Lindley always attends as well. The upcoming first meeting of the year will be held October 4th in room 206. The great thing about book club is that even if you miss the first or even second meeting, you are able to join book club at any time. The student is able to come to the next one. Students can start coming to book club even if it is third quarter and they have never been to a meeting.
Another benefit of book club is that students are provided snacks that the teachers bring. Who would not want to go to a club where one is provided free desserts and snacks? AHS Book Club is great time to gather around with friends and discuss great novels they have once read.
“We eat snacks and discuss books and to me there is nothing much better than that,” Lindley states.
Book club goal is to promote reading for pleasure and for those who read to have a place to share with others. It is a great way to interact and meet new people who share the same literature and genres you may like. People that enjoy reading and finding new books to read would enjoy joining or looking into book. A new way of learning outside of the regular school day period.
