Where do you want to Park?
Being a junior, I learned this year what a parking pass is and the rules and regulations to obtain one. We have three lots, the senior (green), junior (blue), and sophomore (yellow). Students obtain their passes based on a first come first serve basis, but is this an effective system?
In my opinion, it makes more sense for students to be asked to pick where they want to park based on grade level and gpa. From there, spots should be assigned, this would eliminate chaos and confusion over parking. This is an important topic because some students are stuck parking far away from the building who follow all school rules while others misbehave and park in front of the school.
Driving to school and parking in the lots are a privilege. Many students take this for granted and here at Aurora our rules are not very specific and students are not punished for their behavior and poor academics. The student handbook says, “Student drivers who have excessive tardies may have their driving privileges revoked.” This is the only rule that the school has regarding driving to school and parking. This is a fair rule but more rules should be added. Students love being able to drive to school and if more rules were implemented, students would improve academically and behave better. At North Point High School in Maryland, priorities are set based on grade level, academics, and extracurriculars and to even be eligible for a parking pass, you must have at least a 2.0 GPA. This would be an effective system for many other schools as well. Rewarding students who are involved and are hard working is important.
A new system to organize parking in a fair and effective manner would be easier for students. Having more rules and regulations would also improve the behavior and performance in classes of students because everyone would want a good parking spot.
