Fantasy Fans Must Read Holly Black

In Holly Black’s novel, The Darkest Part of the Forest, Hazel lives in a town shared by both humans and the fae--beings whose tricks could either be harmless or deadly. For as long as anyone in the town could remember, a boy with horns has slept in a glass coffin tucked away in the forest, never waking. When the boy disappears and the coffin is destroyed, so is the relationship between humans and the fae. With the town in danger, Hazel must become the knight she dreamed of being as a child in order to reverse the damage-- damage that may have been her fault.

After reading this book, I read it again. As a lover of fantasy, this book holds a special spot in my heart. The characters and their conflicts (such as teenage relationships, secrets between siblings, and lives at stake) were well developed, and I was rooting for them all the way. A little romance here, a few battles with swords there, my only complaint was that the book wasn’t longer.

For those readers who live and breathe fantasy, especially urban fantasy, Black is the author to read. The Darkest Part of the Forest stays realistic while being based on old wives’ tales about the fae folk. With action at every turn of the page, anyone who picks up this book is sure to become a fan.

In fact, after emerging from Black’s world of the fae, why not delve back in with her latest book, The Cruel Prince? Clearly her fans adored her writing about the fae so much that Black decided to make a series about them. After reading her previous work, this new addition to her repertoire is sure to earn a place on my bookshelf.
