I feel pretty

Most of us have probably felt insecure about ourselves at least once in our lives. In today’s society we focus heavily on what people look like, especially what women look like. The movie I Feel Pretty, starring Amy Schumer, covers this issue with a comedic twist.

I Feel Pretty follows Renee Barrett (Schumer), a young woman living in New York who constantly feels insecure about her own appearance. Her insecurities are so bad that she often passes up certain opportunities out of fear because she feels she could never be good enough. For example, at the beginning of the movie she is too insecure to apply for the receptionist job at a makeup company because she doesn’t feel she is beautiful enough to be the ‘face’ of the company. Barrett soon after attends a spin class with her friends where she falls and hits her head, knocking herself out. When she wakes up she is okay, but she now sees herself as a thin and beautiful woman; all of her insecurities are gone. From here on out we see her basically do all of the things she felt too scared to do before, all because she sees herself differently.

This movie is heavily satirical and is basically just a giant call out of society and the way we view women and their bodies. As Barrett’s self-confidence grows she is able to do the things she was too afraid to try before, and while she thinks it is because she is skinny the audience knows that it is only because she is confident in herself. While watching, there comes a point in the movie where you are basically just screaming at Barrett that she’s looked the same the entire time the only thing that changed was her outlook on herself; only to realize that you should be telling yourself the same thing.

All films have their strengths and weaknesses and I Feel Pretty is no exception to that. While the movie holds a great message and is pretty funny at times, it can seem pretty cheesy. It is fairly unrealistic that you will hit your head and suddenly love yourself. Also some of the jokes seem too forced or even too expected. But for the most part it is a good movie and the cheesiness almost helps deliver the message at times.

Personally I think it’s worth it to watch the movie. It’s a nice movie to just casually watch and be able to enjoy without having to think too hard about it. It is in theaters now, but I could also see it being a great movie to wait for it to come out on DVD so you can watch it at home with whoever.
