Things high school taught me
High school is a four year experience that everyone remembers for the rest of their lives. Whether those four years may be good or bad, high school is a milestone that all people must endure. For me, I would say that my experience here at Aurora High was overall something I will be able to cherish.
From the start of freshmen year to now I have built many bridges while also burning some, connected with teachers, faced many challenges and learned lessons that I will take with me as I enter this new chapter in my life.
High school means something different to everyone. Some people will live in the memories of their high school years while others of us are racing for the door and counting down the seconds before we get to leave.
High school came with many challenges, obstacles, stressors and many more difficult things. However, it also came with friendships, laughs, lessons and memories.
Of course there were times when I was stressed and facing challenges, but high school is what you make it. No, high school was not the best four years of my life and no I would not do it again if I could, but it did teach me some really important lessons.
One of those many lessons is you don’t need a big group of friends to have fun. Having one really close friend makes life better and creates a lot less drama. High school is for getting an education and for getting into college, not “he said, she said” petty drama.
It’s okay to not be good at everything. Some people are better at English while others may be good at Math. Don’t beat yourself up if you are not good at something. One bad grade in Math is not going to destroy your future. It most likely won’t affect it in the slightest. Just try your hardest and ask your teachers for help.
Your teachers are there to help you so if you don’t understand something just ask. Also, your teachers are real people too. They have lives and families and they were you one time as well. Personally, I have made stronger friendships with some teachers than I have students.
You also do not have to have everything figured out by your senior year. If you know what you want to do then that’s awesome, but if not don’t stress yourself out about it. You will end up exactly where you’re meant to be in the end.
It’s important to spend time with your
family because no matter what they are always the ones who are there for you at the end of the day. After high school and college, they’re the ones who you will always go home too.
High school is hard enough for everyone as is between the tests, sports and drama so try to be nice to everyone. You never know what someone is going through and you all are in the same boat. Get alone with those around you because we need each other.
Lastly, and most importantly, the things that you are stressing about right now won’t matter in a year from now. At the moment, it may seem like the end of the world, but in a year you’ll be able to look back and laugh. In a year, it won’t matter what grade you got on the Math test or who posted what. Your life will be completely different in a year than it is right now.
High school is a series of unfortunate events that prepare and shape you into the person you are and are going to become. Seize the moments, good and bad, and try to enjoy it. As I leave high school and prepare myself for college, I will continue to carry these lessons with me throughout. As all the seniors say goodbye to this chapter in our lives, we say hello to a whole new set of opportunities, struggles, lessons and memories.
