Sevdaliza's New EP, The Calling
Sevda Alizadeh (Persian: سِودا علیزاده), known professionally as Sevdaliza, is an Iranian-Dutch singer, songwriter and record producer. I last wrote about her debut studio album, ISON, but recently she has released a new EP, The Calling.
On January 31st Sevdaliza released a new track "Soul Syncable" and it was released on the day of the super blue moon. “Soul Syncable” is the first song from Sevdaliza, following her debut album “ISON” (2017). On February 26 she released the track “Human Nature”. "Soul Syncable" and “Human Nature” are part of her latest EP The Calling, which was released on March 30, 2018.
The Calling has a completely different tone than ISON, to be honest I find it less depressing and more reflective. The last song on the album is, in my opinion, the happiest song she has ever written. She sings about being high on life, happy and content without any influences.
This EP also sounds different compared to past songs because the string instruments are much more present. I really enjoy how the instrumental music behind the vocals tells an emotional story on it’s own. Because of this, I suggest listening to the songs in order so you can truly appreciate the story being told.
The most noticeable visual difference is the artwork for The Calling compared to ISON. As she has said on her Instagram before, she is passing from RED tones to the BLUE ones, giving us a hint that the theme for her new era will be blue. In ISON, the moving artwork for the album is red and brown trippy lava, always moving and changing design. While The Calling has an older tattooed woman with blue eyes and gold accessories as the moving artwork, along with a picture of Sevdaliza laying down in shackles to introduce the songs. It is hard to tell, but there is slight movement to the position of the old woman’s head despite her expression remaining the same. I have yet to figure out why this is the artwork for the album, maybe it is what Sevdaliza expects to look like in old age, which would tie into the more reflective tone of the album.
Overall, Sevdaliza is one of the most emotionally expressive artist I have ever listened to and it is always interesting. No matter where you are in your life, it can be good to experience something new. So give her new EP The Calling a listen, in order, to enjoy the continued journey of a very artistic woman.
