Team of four tumble and flip together.
At Aurora High School we spend a lot of time talking about football, basketball, and baseball. This isn’t a bad thing by any means, but it often leads to more unique sports, like gymnastics, going unnoticed by the majority of people.
Sophomore gymnast Lauren Lubin said, “Many people do not know there is a gymnastics team at Aurora, but it’s a very fun and interesting sport to watch and be a part of.”
The gymnastics team of Aurora consists of four girls: Freshman Grace Rahill, Sophomores Lauren Lubin and Katie Zamary, and Junior Corinne Henderson.
Most people would agree that being on team of four might be challenging, but according to Lubin, “Being on a team of four is awesome, especially considering the three girls are teammates I have gotten to know and love. It has allowed us to become close and since we practice at West G with so many other teams and make so many amazing friends, having a team of four is just enough.”
Although she does mention some challenges, “At the same time it makes competing that much harder because everyone needs to do their best to help the team.”
Practices for the team are, “Enjoyable, yet at the same time we get things done,” explains Lubin, “There are coaches on every event so we can make the most of each event at every practice.”
The gymnastics season starts in December and continues through February. “There are about 15 meets that everyone competes in, and at the end of the season those who advance from sectionals go on to compete at districts and then possibly states. The majority of the meets are held at West G high school (our technical home) but occasionally there are meets at Gym World Twinsburg and Brecksville High School,” Lubin explained, “The state meet is held at Hilliard Bradley high school.”
Finally Lubin said, “ I would encourage anyone to come and support the Gymnastics team next season, West G is relatively far away but it is a great experience. And for anyone interested in joining the team I would highly recommend it, it is my favorite time of the year and I have made so many lasting relationships with the teammates and coaches.”
