AHS Quiz Bowl team continues to impress

The Aurora High School Quiz Bowl team wrapped up an undefeated season of Portage County Quiz Bowl League meets making them league champs!

This achievement has earned the team a spot at the National Championships in Atlanta on Memorial Day weekend from May 23-25.

The team is unsure if they will attend the National Championships in May as the core of the team is juniors and sophomores. They instead are in favor of getting another year of experience and knowledge under their belts and attending next year.

Additionally, Joey Esposito and Sanjana Duvvuri earned awards for high scorers in the league with Joey ranked #1 overall. Esposito has also been invited (and has accepted) to play in a singles tournament in Illinois in April based on his high performances.

“I felt very proud because I knew that the work I had put into it had paid off. I have a lot of fun playing the game and practicing with the team, so it's an honor to be recognized for something that I enjoy doing,” stated Joey Esposito.

The team practices Tuesday and Friday and they also compete in other tournaments throughout the year. A lot of kids on the team also learn about things they are interested in at school or at home which helps them have success.

Esposito first learned about Quiz Bowl at the club fair when he was a Freshman, and although he was unsure about it at first, he learned a lot from the team and the coach, Mrs. Walker, which inspired him to stick with it. This goes to show that you should be open to any and all opportunities during your time at AHS.

Unlike the National Championships, Joey will be attending the singles tournament in Chicago during April.

When asked about preparation, he expects it to remain the same, “Probably not. I trust that what we have done so far this year will serve us well going forward, and we feel no need to change it.”

To round up his recent success, Esposito stated, “I felt very proud because I knew that the work I had put into it had paid off. I have a lot of fun playing the game and practicing with the team, so it's an honor to be recognized for something that I enjoy doing.”

If you are interested in joining the Quiz Bowl team, feel free to contact Mrs. Walker or any of the team members for details!
