Girls Basketball peaking at the right time

The Aurora girls basketball team has taken their level of play to a whole new level. After a 18-7 campaign last season, the Lady Greenmen have a current 21-2 record.

Much of this success is due to the work they have put in in the offseason. “Our players are very talented and work hard in season and in the off season,” said head coach Erika Greenberg. Aurora’s athletic trainer Tom Wymer and coach Greenberg’s staff help to train the girls for the rigorous in-season schedule.

The senior trio of Tylor Keebey, Morgan Riedel, and Olivia Ryncarz have also provided a valuable role to the team.

“The three seniors have been very impactful this year. They are so supportive and helpful with everything. They bring energy and competitiveness to the floor,” said Junior guard/forward Shayla Sellers.

After winning a share of the Suburban League American title last season, the team was able to go undefeated in conference play this year to finish alone atop the Suburban League. “It was nice to go undefeated, however we still have work to do to accomplish more of our goals,” stated Greenberg. The team is aware the journey is just beginning and there is still much work to be done.

“We really want to get to the district finals this year. Our district is very competitive this year and the teams are very talented, but we are talented as well. We believe if we play our game and execute, we have a very high chance of getting there this year,” stated freshman guard Shyanne Sellers.

The youngest of four Sellers, Shyanne is currently receiving many division one looks from ACC, Big Ten, and SEC schools among many others. Shayla committed to Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne a few days after Christmas. Syarra, who graduated last year, is currently playing at Sienna Heights University.

“It’s very fun the play with Shyanne. She’s very talented and brings so much to the court. It’s pretty great that’s she’s only a freshman and can do the things she can do. She brings energy and can make everyone on the team laugh. She’s an amazing player and person on and off the court,” stated the Shayla, the older member of the Sellers duo.

The team is appreciative of the efforts from coach Greenberg and her staff, “The success of our team is all thanks to our coach. Every day she works to make us better and pushes us to our best ability,” said Sophomore Dylynn Lasky.

The current record of 21-2 is a school record. The previous record for wins was 18-3.

The Lady Greenmen took down Hathaway Brown 63-42 in the sectional semifinal on Saturday. They take on Cleveland John Hay tonight at 7:00pm at the Greenhouse.
